Morse Mountains is a custom-built tabletop for both functional use and artistic display. Each small acrylic piece is press-fit into place in the pattern that was milled by a CNC router. The colors of each acrylic piece were chosen so they end result of the larger picture is an abstract view of trees dotting a gray mountainside.
The arrangement of these shapes is not random, but generated by converting a sample of text into morse code and rotating so it cascades along the length. Each circle represents a dot, each small rectangle represents a dash.
The simple materials of relatively-unfinished plywood and matte acrylic were chosen in order to withstand active use as a work surface without being damaged.
